Volkswagen is set to reveal the updated Taigun on April 9, and this mid-cycle update looks to be an evolution. The focus is on refining what already works, while adding features and improving usability.
The overall silhouette remains unchanged. It still has the same upright stance, flat bonnet and strong shoulder line. The changes are concentrated at the front and rear. Expect new LED headlamps with a slightly curvier design, along with a reworked bumper that now uses more black inserts to align with newer Volkswagen SUVs. There is also a new design for the alloy wheels.
At the rear, the changes are more subtle. The connected LED tail-lamps are expected to get updated detailing, and there could be an illuminated Volkswagen badge. The bumper design is also likely to be revised with added cladding.
Inside, the updates are expected to be more noticeable. A larger 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is likely, along with an updated 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Volkswagen may also introduce an AI-based assistant.
Other additions could include a panoramic sunroof, rear seat massage function and improved air conditioning performance. Existing features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ventilated front seats, wireless charging and cruise control are expected to continue.
Safety equipment is likely to remain strong, with six airbags, electronic stability control, hill start assist, parking sensors, a rear camera and tyre pressure monitoring system expected to be offered. All-wheel disc brakes are also likely to be standard across more variants.
Under the hood, the Taigun is expected to continue with the same turbo-petrol engines. The 1.0-litre unit produces around 114 bhp and 178 Nm, while the 1.5-litre engine delivers 148 bhp and 250 Nm.
The key change here will be the gearbox. The 1.0-litre engine is expected to get a new 8-speed automatic, replacing the older 6-speed unit. The 1.5-litre engine will continue with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, along with a manual option.
Volkswagen is expected to price the Taigun facelift between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom), with a slight increase over the current model likely.
The update appears to follow a familiar pattern. Keep the core intact, add more features, improve refinement and respond to customer feedback. If executed well, it should help the Taigun stay relevant in an increasingly competitive segment without losing its enthusiast appeal.
