MG has launched not one, but two new SUVs based on its versatile ADAPT platform. Alongside the Hector Tomahawk EV, MG has also introduced a PHEV version. The Hector Tomahawk PHEV combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack. MG claims that this SUV can go over 1100km on a single tank of fuel. The MG Hector Tomahawk shares a similar design and interior with the EV, while offering a different powertrain setup. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
Design
The MG Hector Tomahawk shares its overall design language with its EV counterpart however it gets a functional grille with chrome and gloss black elements in the profile it gets 18-inch alloy wheels. The MG Hector Tomahawk is offered in six colour options: Turquoise green, Aurora Silver, Starry Black, Pearl White and Shadow Gold.
Interior and Features
It has a similar interior layout as its EV counterpart. A 15.6-inch infotainment screen and a smaller driver’s display wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto connectivity, and a digital driver’s display. It also gets a 10-speaker Infinity audio system. Other features include powered and ventilated front seats, ADAS level 2, connected Car tech and a 360 degree camera.
Powertrain
The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, paired with a 20.5kWh battery pack and a PMSM electric motor. The petrol engine produces 102hp and 125Nm, while the electric motor and battery deliver a combined 201hp and 237Nm. MG is yet to reveal the overall combined output of the powertrain. The setup is paired with a dedicated hybrid transmission and an E-clutch.
The Tomahawk PHEV offers six drive modes: Pure EV, Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid, Regenerative, Pure Engine and Engine Drive + Charge. In Pure EV mode, the battery powers the electric motor, while in Series Hybrid mode, the engine generates electricity to power the motor. Parallel Hybrid mode uses both the engine and motor to drive the wheels, while the remaining modes are designed to optimise regeneration, engine use and battery charging. The system automatically switches between these modes based on the driving conditions, so there’s no need for the driver to select them manually.
MG claims an all-electric range of 115km, while the Tomahawk PHEV can travel up to 1,100km on a single tank of fuel. Charging is handled by a 3.3kW AC charger, which takes 7.5 hours to charge the battery from 10 to 100 per cent. It also supports 25kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to go from 30 to 80 per cent in 35 minutes.
Pricing and Market positioning
The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV is offered in two variants: Exclusive which has been priced ₹25.69 lakh (introductory ex-showroom) and Essence which has been priced at ₹27.79 lakh (introductory ex-showroom). MG is also offering the Hector Tomahawk PHEV with a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, with prices starting at ₹21.79 lakh plus ₹3.2 per km. It will compete with the Toyota Innova Hycross, Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar.
