Volkswagen Golf R heads back to the Nürburgring

Volkswagen is preparing to take the Golf R racing once again, and this time it is teaming up with Max Kruse Racing for an assault on the Nürburgring. Meet the Golf R 24H, a track-focused preview that hints at the brand’s return to the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2027.

At first glance, subtlety has clearly been left in the paddock. The Golf R 24H gets an aggressive front splitter, widened arches and a rear wing large enough to qualify as patio furniture. It still looks unmistakably like a Golf, just one that has spent too much time at the gym.

Volkswagen has not revealed technical details yet, so there is no word on power figures, weight, or exactly which racing class it will compete in. What we do know is that All Wheel Drive remains part of the package, which is hardly surprising considering this is still a Golf R underneath.

The racecar is being developed with Max Kruse Racing and is expected to make its competitive debut at the 2027 Nürburgring 24 Hours. Timing matters here because 2027 also marks 25 years since the debut of Volkswagen’s R badge, which first appeared on the Golf R32 in 2002.

That original R32 became a cult favourite for its compact dimensions, six-cylinder soundtrack and all-weather grip. Since then, the Golf R badge has evolved into something quicker, sharper and considerably more digital. Going back to racing feels like Volkswagen reminding enthusiasts that the badge still means something beyond launch control demonstrations in parking lots.

For now, the Golf R 24H remains a preview rather than a finished race car, but the intent is clear. Volkswagen wants the Golf R back on one of the toughest circuits in the world, and frankly, the Nürburgring is probably a more natural habitat for it anyway.
