Mercedes has built a very real AMG GT APXGP Edition to honour a Formula 1 team that doesn't actually exist. It's inspired by the upcoming F1 film starring Brad Pitt and styled after the fictional APXGP team from the movie because nothing says commitment like painting a limited-edition AMG in matte black and gold for a team that can't score points.
52 cars, 585 horses, zero race wins
Built on the AMG GT 63 4Matic+ platform, this special-edition GT features the familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. That means 585 bhp and 800 Nm of torque. It'll do 0 to 100 kmph in about 3.2 seconds and probably frighten your neighbours while doing it. Top speed? A heady 315 kmph, just in case the fictional team needs a real qualifying lap.
The APXGP Edition wears a matte black paint scheme paired with gold accents. There's gold on the grille, gold on the wheels (21 inches, if you're counting), and gold stripes down the side. Mercedes has also thrown in the AMG Exterior Carbon Package, the AMG Aerodynamics Package with a fixed rear wing, and the Night Package II. That's a lot of packages, most of them expensive and some mostly decorative.
Inside: more gold, less subtlety
The cabin is black with gold stitching. The AMG Performance seats, steering wheel, vents, and even the instrument panel have gold highlights. Mercedes didn't forget the badge either, you'll find a 'Limited Edition 1 of 52' plaque just in case someone mistakes it for a regular GT.
Of course, there's a 15-speaker Burmester 33 audio system and ambient lighting too. Because when you're playing a pretend race team owner, you might as well do it in style.
Interestingly, Mercedes-AMG isn't just showing up for the movie's red carpet. They provided vehicles for filming, including an SL, a G-Wagen and this GT. Even Lewis Hamilton has a hand in it, not in the driving, but as a co-producer. Probably safer that way.
Mercedes hasn't announced how much this car will cost or where you'll be able to buy one. However, with only 52 units planned globally, chances are most are already booked. Still, if you have deep pockets and a soft spot for cinema-themed cars, there's always hope.
Or you could watch the movie.
