At the 2025 Motul Petit Le Mans in Georgia, BMW pulled the wraps off something that will make both petrolheads and purists grin. The 2026 M2 Turbo Design Edition is a genuine nod to the iconic BMW 2002 Turbo that first spooled up back in 1973.
Painted in classic Alpine White, the M2 Turbo Design Edition wears hand-painted Motorsport stripes and a black bonnet proudly stamped with "turbo" in mirror script. It is a respectful salute to the 2002 Turbo's cheeky graphics that once startled slower traffic on German autobahns.
Retro roots, manual spirit
BMW says production begins in January 2026, and this one is strictly for the faithful, featuring only a six-speed manual gearbox. The cabin gets sporty black Vernasca leather seats with M-colour highlights, a heated Alcantara steering wheel, and a neat "turbo" badge ahead of the gear lever. Tick a few boxes and you can have M Carbon bucket seats and the M Drivers Package, which bumps the top speed to 285 kmph.
A turbocharged tribute
Under that vented bonnet lives the same 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo straight-six that churns out 473 bhp and a healthy 550 Nm of torque. That is enough to launch the M2 from 0 to 100kmph in just over 4 seconds and on to a top speed of 250kmph, or 285kmph if you have opted for the M Drivers Pack.
There is no fancy hybrid trickery here, just good old-fashioned turbo grunt channelled through the rear wheels. BMW has not forgotten its roots.
Design that talks to the past
The details matter. The carbon fibre roof carries the tricolour M stripes, the rear spoiler is finished in black carbon, and the "turbo" script at the back is a knowing wink to the past. Standard 19 and 20-inch M wheels finished in black complete the stance, though those with deeper pockets can spring for matte gold bronze alloys. Because why not.
Price and exclusivity
At 82,900 US dollars or around 69 lakh rupees before duties, this M2 is not exactly pocket change and that is before the one lakh rupees destination and handling charge. With limited numbers and oodles of heritage baked in, the Turbo Design Edition looks set to be one of those BMWs that enthusiasts will be talking about years from now.
