Porsche has set an official Nürburgring lap time of 6 minutes 45.389 seconds with the 911 GT3 RS fitted with the Manthey Racing kit. That number, on its own, is impressive. The context makes it more interesting.
Because this car does it with just 518 bhp. No hybrid boost, no turbochargers and certainly nowhere near the 1,250 bhp figure of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X it manages to beat. The Manthey kit does not add power. Instead, it focuses on what really matters on a circuit like the Nürburgring: Aerodynamics, chassis setup and mechanical grip.
Downforce is a big part of that. The car generates over 1,000 kg of downforce at high speed, allowing sections of the track that would normally require a lift to be taken flat out. That alone changes how a lap comes together. The tyres also play a role. This run was set on road-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres, which maximise the benefit of the aero and suspension changes. Compared to the standard GT3 RS, the Manthey-equipped car is around 4 seconds quicker. That is a meaningful gain, considering how capable the base car already is.
What stands out is the approach. While others chase bigger numbers and more power, Porsche has taken a different route. Refine what is already there, improve efficiency and extract more from the same hardware.
It is also worth noting where it sits overall. The Mustang GTD Competition has recently gone even quicker, with a 6-minute 40-second lap, albeit with significantly more power and a far more extreme setup.
Even so, this result reinforces a familiar idea. Around a track like the Nürburgring, outright power is only part of the equation. Balance, downforce and control often matter more.
