In a move that's bound to ignite a storm of passionate debate online, Nissan has unveiled plans to electrify one of the most beloved icons in car culture: the R32 Skyline GT-R, fondly known as Godzilla. And no, we're not talking about an actual nuclear-powered, rampaging monster, but a classic sports car that will undergo a high-voltage transformation.
Starting in March 2023, Nissan's engineers have been quietly converting the R32 into an electric vehicle (EV), a task they’ve approached with what they call a "dedicated team of volunteer engineers." The results of their work will be revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2024, where Nissan will give the world a first look at its electrified Godzilla.
The car's transformation is shrouded in mystery for now, but Nissan has promised to capture the spirit of the iconic BNR32 Skyline. The automaker plans to integrate “modern electrification,” which we assume translates to a pair of electric motors, all-wheel drive, and possibly more torque than the monster ever saw in its petrol-chugging days.
While Nissan hasn't spilt the beans on the full powertrain details just yet, it’s safe to say the performance of this electric beast will be anything but subdued. If the R32’s original turbocharged six-cylinder engine could put out around 280 bhp, it wouldn’t be surprising to see those numbers drastically improved with the wonders of modern electric technology. And with Nissan’s dedication to the electrification movement, this new Godzilla could potentially break even more hearts than the iconic Skyline ever did.
Of course, this electrified Godzilla will likely stir the pot on social media. Fans of the original Skyline will undoubtedly have strong opinions on whether or not this EV conversion tarnishes the heritage of their beloved sports car. On the flip side, animal rights activists may find it hard to forgive Nissan for subjecting Godzilla to an endless battery diet.
