What’s New?
Nissan has just launched a CNG version of the Magnite. Prices begin at ₹6.89 lakh and go up to ₹10.02 lakh, depending on how fancy your taste in budget SUVs is. Bookings open on June 1, but are currently available only in 7 states: Delhi-NCR, Haryana, UP, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Karnataka.
The Engine: Modest Intentions
There’s only one engine on offer, a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol motor. In plain terms, this isn’t going to tear your face off. No turbo, no CVT, and definitely no "sports mode" button pretending to do something. Just 72 bhp and 96 Nm of torque, sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual.
The Kit Bit
The CNG kit is supplied by Motozen and fitted at authorised centres. It’s not factory-installed, but Nissan backs it with a 3-year/1 lakh km warranty. The cost? ₹75,000 over the regular petrol variant. So if you were eyeing the Tekna+ petrol at ₹9.27 lakh, the CNG version will set you back ₹10.02 lakh.
Trims & Tech
All six petrol variants, Visia, Visia+, Acenta, N-Connecta, Tekna, and Tekna+, can be ordered with the CNG kit. No changes to features or interior layout. So if you want wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay or that rather decent 8-inch touchscreen, you'll need to cough up for the higher variants.
Why You Might Care
Compared to rivals like the Tata Punch CNG (₹7.30–10.17 lakh) and Hyundai Exter CNG (₹7.51–9.25 lakh), the Magnite undercuts them at the entry-level. Only the Renault Kiger CNG comes close, and not surprisingly, it also uses a ₹75,000 dealer-fit kit.
Should You?
If your daily drive is more traffic jam than racetrack and your fuel budget is starting to resemble a student loan, this might be worth considering. It won’t set your trousers on fire, but it also won’t set your wallet on fire either.
Coming Next
Phase 2 will expand fitment across more states. No word yet on whether the turbocharged version or the CVT will join the CNG party. Probably not, they’ve seen what a CVT does when it meets compressed gas and a hill.
