Mercedes-Benz introduced the Concept CLA Class at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025. Positioned as the electric successor to the CLA, this concept is the first model in a new lineup of entry-level luxury vehicles based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA). In addition to its new design and technologies, the vehicle debuts Mercedes-Benz's latest operating system.
Next-Generation Electric Powertrain
The Concept CLA Class previews Mercedes-Benz's latest electric-drive technology, derived directly from the Vision EQXX concept. With a claimed range exceeding 750 km and an energy consumption of 12 kWh/100 km, it is referred to as the "one-litre car for the electric age" — an homage to hyper-efficient internal combustion vehicles.
The vehicle has an 800V electric architecture, allowing 250 kW DC fast charging. In just 15 minutes, the Concept CLA can recharge for up to 400 km. Its battery is available in two variants:
- Silicon-oxide anode design for higher-spec versions.
- Lithium-iron phosphate for entry-level models.
The battery powers a 235 bhp permanently excited synchronous motor with a 2-speed transmission. At just 110 kg, the powertrain boasts an impressive 93% energy efficiency from battery to wheel during long-distance driving.
Modular Platform
Built on the MMA platform, the Concept CLA Class is designed as an electric-first vehicle, though it also supports combustion engine drivetrains. The concept model is configured for rear-wheel drive, but its modular setup makes it adaptable to all-wheel-drive configurations.
The vehicle also includes bi-directional charging capabilities, enabling it to perform vehicle-to-home (V2H), vehicle-to-grid (V2G), and vehicle-to-appliance (V2A) tasks. This feature highlights its potential for future smart energy integration.
Exterior Design
The Concept CLA Class redefines Mercedes-Benz's design language with a low-slung stance, shark-nose front, and coupe-like roofline. The illuminated grille features a prominent Mercedes emblem surrounded by animated stars. Connected LED lighting extends across the fenders and doors, adding to its futuristic appeal.
At the rear, the car sports pronounced haunches, a short notchback-style boot lid, and a wraparound light bar with mirrored chrome effects. Frameless doors and a sleek glasshouse accentuate the car's modern aesthetic.
Interior
The Concept CLA showcases the MBUX Superscreen, a full-width digital dashboard running the brand's new MB.OS operating system. This architecture integrates Google Maps and other embedded applications, delivering a seamless in-car experience.
Highlights include:
- Digitally Visualized AC Vents: Featuring a floating effect and physical control interfaces.
- Ambient Lighting: Blue and violet strips create a dynamic cabin environment.
- Sustainable Materials: Upholstery uses sustainably produced nappa leather in silver and crystal white.
The cabin design is complemented by advanced Level 3 Lidar-based autonomous driving capabilities. While initial models will feature Level 2 autonomy, Mercedes-Benz plans to offer over-the-air updates for upgrading to higher autonomy levels.
Safety
One of the standout safety features is the Child Presence Detection (CPD) system, which uses cameras and sensors to detect breathing patterns. If a child is left unattended, the system alerts users, triggers air conditioning, and sounds the horn to mitigate risks in hot weather.
India Launch in 2025
The Concept CLA Class is scheduled for production in 2025. Mercedes-Benz has indicated that the production model will closely resemble the concept, offering Indian buyers a glimpse into the future of luxury electric mobility. Pricing details have yet to be announced.
