Ferrari SC40: a one-off that pays tribute to the F40

Ferrari has revealed the SC40, a stunning one-off supercar built through its exclusive Special Projects programme. While not a direct successor to the iconic Ferrari F40, the SC40 draws heavy inspiration from it — both in spirit and design. Crafted on the Ferrari 296 GTB platform, this new creation is a celebration of heritage reimagined through modern engineering.

Unlike the F40, which was designed with Pininfarina, the SC40 was developed entirely in-house at Ferrari’s Styling Centre, led by Flavio Manzoni. The design subtly incorporates elements that nod to the F40, including side air intakes reminiscent of F40’s NACA ducts, an integrated rear wing with “SC40” embossing, and a smoked Lexan engine cover.

Under the hood, the SC40 remains grounded in the 296 GTB platform — meaning the powertrain is the familiar 120-degree 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 which makes 819bhp and 750Nm, rather than adopting a twin‑turbo V8 or a gated manual gearbox as the original F40 had. That said, the visual treatment elevates its presence: smoked Lexan louvres over the engine bay echo the F40’s sexy rear end.

One striking visual choice: the SC40’s white paint and matching wheels. These features are exclusive to this singular car, reinforcing its one‑off status. Inside, Ferrari has gievn it Kevlar accents extensively — from the steering wheel and dashboard to floor mats and seats — channeling the race‑inspired aesthetic of the F40.

Only one SC40 will ever be built. The price has not been disclosed publicly, but given the bespoke nature and one‑off status, it likely commands a premium well above the base cost of a 296 GTB.

While not a true spiritual successor to the F40, there's no arguing over the fact that the SC40 is certainly a thing to behold.
