BMW’s M3 Touring GT race car set for Nurburgring debut after starting life as an April Fools’ joke

BMW’s motorsport division has turned what was originally an internet prank into a real racing machine. The BMW M3 Touring 24H, a competition-spec version of the BMW M3 Touring, will take part in endurance racing events at the legendary Nürburgring, including the upcoming Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2026.

The idea for the car first appeared in 2025 when BMW posted images of a fictional race-prepared M3 Touring as an April Fools’ Day joke. The concept featured a highly modified estate car built to resemble a GT3 racer. However, the response from fans and the online community was so enthusiastic that BMW eventually decided to transform the joke into a real project.

From internet prank to real race car

BMW M engineers developed the racing estate using the same technical foundation as the BMW M4 GT3 Evo. The estate body style required several design adjustments compared with the coupe-based race car.

Because the Touring body is longer, the race car itself is also around 200mm longer than the M4 GT3 Evo, a change that includes the enormous rear wing mounted at the back. The wing is positioned higher as well – roughly 32mm taller than the one used on the M4 GT3 Evo – so that it sits in cleaner airflow above the wagon-style rear bodywork.

This unique configuration makes the M3 Touring one of the most unusual endurance racing cars in recent years, combining the practicality of a high-performance estate with the extreme aerodynamic features normally seen on GT race machinery.

Special livery inspired by fans

One of the most distinctive elements of the car is its livery. BMW has included actual comments from the original April Fools’ social media post within the graphics on the bodywork. Many of these comments were written by fans who expressed their desire for the car to become a real racing project rather than just a joke.

By incorporating these messages, BMW has effectively turned the car into what the company describes as a “community” project, reflecting the enthusiasm from its fanbase that helped bring the idea to life.

Nürburgring racing programme

The M3 Touring race car will compete in the SP-X category, which is reserved for special or experimental vehicles. Its first competitive outing is scheduled for the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) event at the Nürburgring on 21 March, where the car will make its racing debut. Following that appearance, the car will take part in the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours, which will be held on 16–17 May.

Factory driver line-up

BMW has also confirmed a strong driver line-up for the programme. The car will be driven by factory racers:

  • Jens Klingmann

  • Ugo de Wilde

  • Connor De Phillippi

  • Neil Verhagen

All four drivers have extensive experience racing BMW machinery in international GT and endurance competitions.

A racing estate like no other

The project highlights BMW M’s willingness to experiment with unconventional ideas. While the standard M3 Touring is already known for combining performance with everyday practicality, its transformation into a fully fledged endurance race car makes it a truly unique machine.

What started as a humorous social media concept has now evolved into a serious motorsport programme, and the M3 Touring 24H will soon tackle one of the toughest endurance races in the world at the Nürburgring.
