BMW India launches the new X5

BMW has refreshed the X5 for India, and it is now sharper, better equipped and a touch more adventurous. Produced locally at BMW’s Chennai plant, the luxury SUV is available in both petrol and diesel guises, with the new xOffroad package standard across all trims.

Variants and Pricing

The range begins with the X5 xDrive40i petrol at ₹1.03 crore (ex-showroom). Its sportier sibling, the X5 xDrive40i M Sport Pro, comes in at ₹1.13 crore. For diesel buyers, the X5 xDrive30d starts at ₹1.02 crore, while the 30d M Sport Pro tops the line-up at ₹1.15 crore.

Design and Presence

The facelift brings BMW’s latest design language with adaptive matrix LED headlamps, L-shaped tail lights and a bolder front end. Standard 21-inch alloys add visual weight, while the M Sport Pro pack throws in blacked-out details, M exhausts, red brake callipers and piano black interior trim.

Inside the Cabin

The X5’s cabin is as plush as you expect, featuring the curved widescreen display – a 12.3-inch driver’s display paired with a 14.9-inch central control screen. Comfort seats with electric adjustment and lumbar support are now standard, joined by four-zone climate control, a Harman Kardon surround system and a panoramic sunroof. Buyers can choose from extended Merino leather in Ivory White or Tartufo, or perforated Sensafin upholstery in Cognac.

Power and Performance

BMW continues with its six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, both assisted by a 48V mild-hybrid system.

  • xDrive40i petrol: 381 bhp and 520 Nm, 0–100 kmph in 5.4 seconds.

  • xDrive30d diesel: 286 bhp and 650 Nm, 0–100 kmph in 6.1 seconds.

Both units are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. Adaptive two-axle air suspension is standard.

The Offroad Edge

The new xOffroad package is fitted to all trims. Four terrain modes – Sand, Rocks, Gravel and Snow – adjust suspension height, xDrive settings, throttle response and transmission mapping. Underbody protection and off-road display in the central screen add further reassurance, making this X5 more versatile than before.

Technology and Safety

The SUV is packed with connected features such as BMW ID, Digital Key Plus, remote parking through a smartphone and the latest iDrive interface with Intelligent Personal Assistant. Safety kit includes multiple airbags, DSC, Cornering Brake Control, attentiveness assist, ISOFIX and a drive recorder.

Verdict

The updated X5 is less about reinventing the wheel and more about polishing a proven formula. With added tech, fresher looks, and genuine off-road capability, it continues to play the role of a luxury SUV that can still get its wheels dirty when needed.
