Volkswagen Tayron Unveiled As Tiguan Allspace Successor

Volkswagen has officially introduced the new Tayron, which is set to replace the Tiguan Allspace globally and offers greater practicality, enhanced technology, and multiple engine options. This new model is effectively a larger, three-row version of the Tayron that was previously revealed at the Beijing Motor Show, carrying the 'Tiguan L Pro' name. Tayron's advanced digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen set it apart in the market, according to the marque.

The new Tayron aims to cater to families and larger groups. It offers more space and versatile features while competing with the Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Meridian in the market.

Volkswagen Tayron: Engine and Performance Options

The Volkswagen Tayron offers four powertrain options: mild-hybrid petrol, pure petrol, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and diesel, with two-wheel-drive (2WD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations.

-The base model has a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol mild-hybrid engine that produces 147bhp and sends power to the front wheels.

-Two options for the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine are available, delivering 201bhp or 261bhp. Buyers can choose between front-wheel drive and Volkswagen's 4Motion 4WD system for these variants.

-The diesel version has a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, available with either 148bhp or 190bhp. The 148bhp model is front-wheel drive, while the more powerful 190bhp version has 4Motion 4WD.

-The top-spec Tayron is a PHEV, combining a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor. This variant offers two power outputs: 201bhp or 268bhp, both sending power through the front wheels. The PHEV boasts an impressive electric-only range of over 100km, thanks to its 19.7kWh battery, which can be charged at up to 50kW DC speeds.

Each engine has a seven-speed automatic gearbox, except the PHEV, which features a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Volkswagen Tayron: Dimensions, Interior, and Features

The Tayron has been stretched by 231mm compared to the regular Tiguan, offering additional interior space and the option of a third row of seats. This translates to an extra 198 litres of boot capacity, bringing the total to 885 litres in the standard five-seater version. However, due to its underfloor battery placement, the PHEV version loses 18 litres of boot space and cannot be configured with seven seats.

Inside, the Tayron offers a tech-infested cabin. It features a standard 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. An optional 15-inch head-up display provides a more immersive driving experience. On the tech front, the Tayron is packed with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and Autonomous Emergency Brakes.

Volkswagen Tayron: PHEV's Capabilities

One of the standout features of the Tayron is its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. With a 19.7kWh battery, this version can deliver more than 100km of electric-only driving range, making it suitable for city commutes without relying on petrol. The PHEV's battery supports fast charging, up to 50kW DC speeds, enabling quicker turnaround times during charging stops.

Volkswagen Tayron: India Launch and Competition

Volkswagen has confirmed that deliveries of the new Tayron will commence in the UK in March 2025, with pricing expected to be slightly higher than the outgoing Tiguan Allspace. For the Indian market, the Tayron will be assembled via entirely knocked-down (CKD) kits and is expected to be launched in 2025.

In India, Tayron will compete with rivals like Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Meridian, which have similar prices and feature brackets.

This new Volkswagen promises to build on the legacy of the Tiguan Allspace while offering a more versatile and tech-rich driving experience, meeting the needs of modern Indian SUV buyers.
