Royal Enfield Classic 650: Everything You Need to Know

Royal Enfield has recently unveiled the Classic 650 at the prestigious 2024 EICMA show in Milan, drawing on its rich heritage of classic designs while trying to push forward with modern advancements. This new model is a continuation of the legacy established by its smaller sibling, the Classic 350, with updates that make it fit for the modern rider who values both style and performance.

Classic 650 Design: A Nod to the Past with Modern Touches

Visually, the Classic 650 mirrors the aesthetic of the Classic 350, carrying a vintage-inspired look that captures the nostalgia of Royal Enfield’s iconic design. Key elements include a round headlamp, teardrop-shaped fuel tank, and rounded fenders. However, a few aspects make it distinctly larger and more rugged: a wider rear fender, twin exhaust pipes, and a bigger fuel tank lend it a more substantial presence.

The Classic 650 will be available in four classic color options—Teal, Vallum Red, Bruntingthorpe Blue, and Black Chrome—adding a touch of timeless elegance and catering to varying rider tastes. Notably, the Teal and Black Chrome color options pay homage to colors offered on previous Royal Enfield models, adding a sense of continuity for Royal Enfield fans.

Engine and Performance: The Heart of the Classic 650

At the heart of the Classic 650 lies Royal Enfield’s well-regarded 648cc parallel-twin engine, shared with other models in the 650cc lineup, like the Super Meteor and Shotgun 650. The engine produces 46.3bhp at 7,250rpm and 52.3Nm of torque at 5,650rpm, offering a smooth and responsive ride. Riders will appreciate the 6-speed gearbox equipped with a slip-and-assist clutch, making shifts easier and reducing rear-wheel lockup during aggressive downshifts.

Suspension and Wheels: Designed for Comfort and Control

While the Classic 650 shares its core frame with the Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650, it has been tailored specifically for a more relaxed, classic ride. The bike features a 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wire-spoke wheel setup, similar to the Classic 350, but beefed up to handle the additional power and weight of the 650 engine. Suspension duties are handled by 43mm Showa telescopic forks at the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear, offering a balance of comfort and stability on the road.

The 100/90-19 front and 140/70-R18 rear tires are MRF Nylohighs, which add to the bike’s grip and provide reliable traction. This combination should ensure that the Classic 650 performs well on both city streets and winding country roads.

Features and Technology: Blending Heritage with Modernity

In keeping with the retro theme, the Classic 650 is equipped with a semi-digital instrument console, similar to the Classic 350 but enhanced with additional functionality. It includes a Tripper navigation pod for seamless navigation, a feature that has become a staple on Royal Enfield models, and a gear position indicator. Full-LED lighting improves visibility, while adjustable levers for the clutch and brake add a personalized touch to the rider experience.

Riders can also benefit from the dual-channel ABS for better braking control, which is especially useful for handling the bike’s weight of 243kg. With a 14.8-liter fuel tank—the largest on any RE 650 model aside from the Super Meteor—the Classic 650 is built to handle longer journeys.

Comfort and Ergonomics: Built for Long Rides

The Classic 650 is designed to prioritize rider comfort, featuring an 800mm seat height and 154mm of ground clearance, making it accessible for a wide range of riders. While it comes with a single seat as standard, Royal Enfield has made it easy to add a pillion seat by installing a bolt-on sub-frame. This flexibility allows the bike to cater to both solo riders and those looking to share their journeys.

Expected Release and Pricing

Although the exact pricing has yet to be announced, Royal Enfield enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting its arrival, with some hoping to see it showcased at upcoming MotoVerse events. The Classic 650 is expected to offer a competitive price, fitting in as a premium retro-styled option in Royal Enfield’s lineup, catering to riders who want a mix of classic aesthetics and modern power.
