Ingolstadt, Germany – Audi is accelerating its Formula 1 ambitions with the appointment of former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto as the head of its F1 project. Effective August 1, Binotto will take on the role of Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer at Sauber Motorsport AG, the company behind Audi’s F1 entry.
This strategic move comes as part of Audi’s complete takeover of Sauber and a subsequent restructuring of its F1 management team. The German automaker aims to streamline operations and expedite decision-making processes to ensure a competitive entry into the pinnacle of motorsport.
Binotto brings a wealth of experience to Audi, having spent over 25 years in Formula 1. His career at Ferrari saw him climb the ranks from engineer to team principal, providing him with a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges of the sport.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mattia Binotto to the Audi family,” said Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG. “His proven leadership and technical expertise will be invaluable as we strive for success in Formula 1.”
To facilitate a more focused and agile organization, Audi has made the decision to part ways with Oliver Hoffmann, previously Chairman of the Boards of Directors for all Sauber companies, and Andreas Seidl, former CEO of Sauber Motorsport AG and Sauber Technologies AG. The company expressed its gratitude for their contributions to the early stages of the F1 project.
With Binotto at the helm, Audi is poised to make a significant impact on Formula 1. The team's performance will be closely watched as they prepare for their debut season in 2026.
