Porsche 911 GT3 based GT4 R racer unveiled ahead of 2027 motorsport season

Porsche has unveiled their GT4 R racecar ahead of the 2027 motorsport season. The GT4 R racecar is based on the 911 GT3 and is set to replace the Cayman GTR. Porsche claims that the GT4 R offers a more powerful engine, a wider track, and better electronics than the Cayman GTR. But that GT4 R name might make you think you are reading it wrong, and if it has you scratching your head, here is why it makes sense.

Porsche customer motorsport programme

Ever since Porsche’s debut in the GT4 category in 2016, Porsche has become one of the most successful brands in the GT4 scene. Porsche has developed and produced more than 1500 cars based on the Cayman. Porsche says that the GT4 R is meant to carry forward Cayman’s success story in the customer motorsport scene.

Porsche 911 GT4 R: Engine and Gearbox

The 911 GT4 R borrows its powertrain from the 911 GT3. It is powered by a 4-litre six-cylinder engine producing 512bhp and 470Nm of torque in the racing version, and 424bhp in the cup version, due to 53.7mm airflow restrictors. Power figures vary depending on the Balance of Performance (BoP) classifications. Power is transmitted via a sequential six-speed gearbox with steering wheel paddle shifters and a four-disc racing clutch.

Porsche 911 GT4 R: Chassis, Suspension and Design

The Porsche 911 GT4 R adopts key body structure from the 911 Cup, but it takes a different approach due to regulations. It gets one-inch narrower wheels, which are mounted using a five-hole pattern as on the standard production models. It comes with dual adjustable dampers and three selectable spring rates, which further expand setup options. The Porsche 911 GT4 R gets a manually adjustable rear wing with up to eleven positions. Porsche has extensively used natural-fibre-reinforced plastic in combination with epoxy resin. Components such as the doors, engine cover, and aerodynamic parts, as well as cockpit components, are made from this material.
