If you’re a true car lover in our country, it’s almost your duty to have a soft spot for fast estate cars. Even though the idea of a car that can outrun a supercar while carrying a family of five and an energetic Labrador is pretty rare, there’s something irresistible about it.
Why are we so excited? Its not like it will come to India. The G91 M5 Touring is set to be a regular production model, available right from the start along with the saloon gloabally. Under the hood, it’s got a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 pumping out 578bhp and 750Nm of torque, with an electric motor that pushes the total output to a jaw-dropping 717bhp and 1000Nm.
That power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, giving the M5 Touring a 0-100 kmph time of just 3.6 seconds—a blink slower than the saloon. The top speed is capped at 250 kmph, or 305 kmph if you spring for the M Driver’s Package. BMW also claims it can do 67.7 km on electric power alone and manage up to 71.4 kmpl, though those figures seem a bit optimistic.
But let’s address the elephant in the room: the Touring weighs in at 2,560 kg, about 125 kg more than the already hefty saloon. That’s roughly the weight of a small elephant.
Still, going for the estate has its perks, beyond just the cool factor. With the seats up, you get 500 litres of boot space, and with the rear seats folded down, that expands to a massive 1,630 litres. You can also add a full-length glass sunroof and an electronically retractable tow hitch that can pull up to 2,000 kg. Perfect for those who need to tow a decent-sized caravan on their weekend adventures.
BMW has also added some extra chassis bracing around the luggage area, using the extra bodywork to improve stiffness.
Inside, it’s pretty much the same as the saloon—M-specific interiors and a full suite of drive modes, including one that sends all the power to the rear wheels for some tail-happy fun. Just don’t try that with your dog in the boot.
The M5 Touring is now available for order in the UK (incase you want to import one), with deliveries starting in early 2025. It’s priced at £112,500 (around ₹1.17 crore).
