Mahindra has announced a date for the reveal of the Thar 5-door. It is August 15. This is exactly 4 years after the Thar 3-door was introduced and falls in line with Mahindra’s history of revealing their cars on Independence day. The Thar 5-door is one of the most hyped launches of 2024, with its 3-door sibling already ruling the hearts of Indian masses. Based on all the leaks and test mules spotted, here is what we know about the upcoming SUV:
Design of Thar 5-Door
The biggest change in the 5-door and 3-door versions of the Thar is the extended wheelbase in the 5-door along with the obvious extra 2 doors. Some other changes are the fresh LED headlights that get C-shaped LED DRLs. It will come with a fixed metal top as an option that wasn't available with the current Thar. We also expect it to get dual-tone alloy wheels .
Interiors of Thar 5-Door
When it comes to the Cabin of the Thar, we expect it to get a beige upholstery and a couple of displays going by the test mules These displays would both be of 10.25 inches and serve as the infotainment and instrument panels respectively. Other features would include a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging and dual-zone automatic control. To ensure safety of passengers, it will get 6 airbags, an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, 360-degree camera and rear disc brakes.
Powertrain of Thar 5-Door
The Mahindra Thar 5-door is expected to have the same engine choices as the 3-door model but with improvements to power. For reference, there is a choice of 3 engines with the Thar 3-door, two diesel and one petrol. In diesel, we have a 1.5-litre engine producing 117 bhp and 300 Nm of torque and a 2.2-litre engine that produces 130 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. The petrol option is a 2.0 Litre engine that churns out 150 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol options get an AWD drivetrain that is likely to also be introduced in the 5-door variant. These are mated with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Price and Competition of the Thar 5-Door
With its unveiling set on August 15, we expect the Indian giant to launch the car soon after. It is expected to get a price tag around Rs 15 Lakh (ex-showroom). It would lock horns with the other off-roading SUVs of the segment, the 5-door Gurkha and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
