MG Windsor EV Review: A New Era of Electric Ownership

In the realm of electric vehicles, where innovation is the driving force, the MG Windsor EV stands out as a beacon of progress. This groundbreaking model, a testament to MG's commitment to electric mobility, introduces a revolutionary concept: Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS). This innovative approach aims to redefine electric car ownership, making it more accessible and affordable for Indian consumers. With its spacious interior, impressive range, and a host of advanced features, the Windsor EV is poised to set new benchmarks in the Indian electric vehicle market.

The MG Windsor EV is a compelling proposition for those looking to make the transition to electric vehicles. Its innovative BaaS model, spacious interior, and comfortable ride make it a practical and enjoyable choice. While it might not be a head-turner, the Windsor's value lies in its overall package and potential to redefine electric car ownership in India.

Exterior

The MG Windsor EV's design is a polarizing subject. While some might find it unconventional, others appreciate its unique blend of MPV and SUV elements. The front fascia features a striking split lighting setup, with pod-style LED headlights below and connected LED DRLs on top. This is rounded off by a healthy dose of chrome that isn't too loud and remains subtle. Moving towards the sides, the flush door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels create a clean and aerodynamic profile. The charging flap is discreetly positioned below the A-pillar on the front left fender for convenience. The blacked-out pillars create a floating roof effect, while the expansive quarter glass at the A and C pillars provide an airy feel.

The rear fascia exudes sportiness and futurism, courtesy of a roof spoiler for enhanced aerodynamics and connected LED tail lamps that create a three-dimensional effect. Additional design elements that elevate the Windsor EV's visual appeal include a fixed panoramic glass roof, which adds to the overall sense of space and light in the cabin. MG offers four color options for the Windsor: Starburst Black, Pearl White, Clay Beige, and Turquoise Green.

Overall, the MG Windsor EV's exterior is a bold and distinctive statement. It's a car that stands out in a crowd and commands attention. While the design may not be for everyone, it's undeniable that the Windsor has a unique and eye-catching aesthetic.

Interior

The MG Windsor EV's interior is a spacious and comfortable place to be. The cabin is dominated by a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which integrates all of the car's controls (it is too big if you ask me). While this system is intuitive to use, the sheer number of functionalities might take some getting used to. The seats are wide and well-padded, offering great comfort for both front and rear passengers. The front seats are electrically adjustable and ventilated, while the rear seats have a 135-degree recline function. The ample legroom and headroom, both in the front and rear, make it a comfortable car for long journeys.

The Windsor's interior is packed with features, including a panoramic sunroof, a premium sound system, and a wireless charging pad. There's also plenty of storage space throughout the cabin, including a large center console, door pockets, and a glove compartment.

One of the highlights of the Windsor's interior is its fixed panoramic glass roof. This feature allows natural light to flood the cabin, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The glass roof can be shaded if desired, providing shade on sunny days. Overall, the MG Windsor EV's interior is a comfortable and well-equipped space. It's a place where you can relax and enjoy the ride, whether you're commuting to work or taking a long road trip.

Driving

The Windsor's driving experience is surprisingly enjoyable. Powered by a 134 bhp electric motor that churns out 200 Nm of torque, it delivers smooth and linear acceleration. The four drive modes - Eco, Eco+, Normal, and Sport - cater to different driving styles. The ride quality is comfortable, thanks to its supple suspension. While it's not a corner carver, the Windsor handles well in city traffic and on highways.

The regenerative braking system helped us conserve energy, extending our range and reducing our reliance on charging stations. The Windsor comes with a 38kWh battery pack that offers a claimed range of 331 kilometers on a single charge. But while we tested the car and ringed its neck, we got around 190 odd kms.  While the charging infrastructure in India is still developing, the Windsor's compatibility with fast charging makes it convenient for long-distance travel.

MG's innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program for its new Windsor EV offers a unique approach to electric vehicle ownership. By allowing customers to lease the battery separately from the vehicle, MG aims to significantly reduce the upfront cost of purchasing an EV. This pioneering scheme provides customers with flexibility in their financing options. They can choose to purchase the vehicle outright or with a loan, while leasing the battery from one of four participating finance companies. These companies offer various rental packages tailored to different usage patterns and credit scores.

MG estimates that customers can save a substantial amount of money over the long term by opting for the BaaS program. This is due to the reduced purchase and running costs, as well as the potential for savings on battery replacement and maintenance. To ensure transparency and accurate usage tracking, MG equips the Windsor with telematics devices. Customers are required to finance both the car and the battery through one of the designated partners, although they can choose to purchase both together at a later date.

In case a customer is unable to continue paying the battery rental, MG has specific guidelines in place. The vehicle may be reclaimed by the company, but the process will take into account depreciation and outstanding rental fees. Customers also have the option to exit the BaaS scheme by settling the remaining battery value and any residual amount for the vehicle. MG further provides reassurance with a lifetime warranty for battery damage or malfunction, insurance coverage for accidental damages, and a buyback guarantee under the MG Shield Plan. Selling the vehicle while under the BaaS agreement requires clearing any outstanding dues to ensure transparency and security for both the seller and the buyer.

Overall Impression

The MG Windsor EV is a well-rounded electric vehicle that offers a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience. Its innovative BaaS model makes it a compelling option for those looking to enter the electric vehicle market without the upfront cost of a battery. While there are areas where it could be improved, such as the infotainment system's reliance on touch controls, the Windsor's overall value proposition is hard to ignore.
