BYD Ocean-M Revealed: This Hot Hatch Could Cause a Storm

BYD has unveiled its latest performance hatchback, the Ocean-M, at the Beijing Auto Show. This car stands out with its unique design and vibrant orange colour, making it a standout in the crowded auto show. Positioned between the Dolphin EV and Seal EV, the Ocean-M is a hatchback that demands attention. Curious about its appearance and power? Let's delve into the details.

Design Language

If we only see how the concept looks, then the Ocean-M is a very radical and aggressive hatchback. On the face of it, it has sleek LED headlights that align with the general BYD designs. The site has various cuts and sharp finishes that look sportier. The flush door handles add to that appeal. The rear is the most straightforward part of the car with connected tail lamps, but the rear, except the rear spoiler, which lifts, gives it proper performance car vibes.

The Ocean-M boasts a bold design with a massive splitter, sill extensions, and a diffuser. The striking orange colour, contrasted by a black roof, amplifies its aggressive stance. This design prowess puts even Teslas to shame. However, it's important to note that the likelihood of all these radical features making it to the final model is low. The Ocean-M is built on a new all-electric platform, potentially the next-generation e-Platform 4.0, which is a thrilling prospect in itself.

How is the Cabin Like

While there aren't many updates on how the Ocean-M's cabin will look, we expect it to come with features that we are used to seeing from the Chinese automaker. These could include a touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a digital instrument cluster, dual-tone interiors, vegan leather seats, a premium sound system, and more. The concept does get a panoramic sunroof, though.

Powertrain and Launch

Much hasn't been revealed about the motor that will power the BYD Ocean-M. It will be launched in the third quarter of 2024 in China and will have a price range from 17.5 Lakh to 23 Lakh. We don't know whether BYD will launch it in India or not but they recently introduced the BYD seal at a competitive price in India. Read about that here.
