Audi A5 Takes the Wheel: The A4 Bids Farewell After 30 Legendary Years

After three decades at the forefront of Audi's compact executive car lineup, the A4 is being retired. Stepping into its place is the A5, a model traditionally known for its stylish coupes but now taking on the mantle as Audi's gas sedan for the world's middle managers. The discontinuation of the A4 isn't a death knell for its lineage; instead, it's part of Audi's strategic shift where even-numbered models will go electric while odd-numbered models will continue to use internal combustion engines.

The new A5 arrives with a refreshed look, upgraded technology, and two spirited internal combustion engines. The base model features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 268 horsepower, delivered to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This engine benefits from variable turbine geometry, enhancing efficiency, though official fuel economy figures are yet to be disclosed.

For those seeking more power, the S5 variant includes a turbocharged 3.0-litre V-6 engine, generating 362 horsepower, and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. This marks the first use of this transmission in an S5. The S5’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system has a sport differential and torque vectoring for improved handling.

Audi has significantly enhanced the A5 and S5’s suspension and steering systems. Adaptive dampers are available, allowing drivers to customize their ride for comfort or performance.

It is likely, both the A5 and S5 will be available exclusively as sedans in India. Internationally, Avant wagon versions will be offered, but there are no plans for coupe or convertible models. These vehicles are the first to use Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion architecture, designed for both front- and all-wheel drive and compatible with hybrid powertrains.

The A5's design is larger yet less swooping compared to the previous A5 Sportback. It features a wide front grille flanked by large vents and genuine tailpipes at the rear. New lighting technology includes LED daytime running lights and second-generation OLED taillights. Dynamic lighting effects are available, with multiple customizable options.

Inside, Audi emphasizes a 'human-centric' design approach, ensuring comfort and safety. The A5 features the 'Digital Stage' infotainment system, comprising two MMI displays that provide essential information to both driver and passenger. The interior design focuses on material quality and visual clarity, offering a spacious and comfortable environment.

The A5 benefits from a longer wheelbase, providing ample interior space, even with its sloping rear profile.

The Digital Stage setup includes a freestanding OLED MMI display, an 11.9-inch virtual Cockpit screen, and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. An optional 10.9-inch display is available for passengers. The configurable head-up display allows drivers to control vehicle and infotainment functions.

Optional features include a passenger screen for navigation or streaming content, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system with headrest speakers. This dual-zone system lets passengers enjoy music or movies without distracting the driver.
