TVS Jupiter CNG Scooter: Production Expected by September 2024

In a move that could disrupt the two-wheeler market, TVS Motor Company is reportedly close to launching India's first CNG scooter, according to sources speaking to Autocar Professional. The company has been working on various alternative fuel technologies for years and has now set its sights on converting its popular Jupiter scooter to CNG.

Codenamed U740, the project is expected to see production begin as early as September or October 2024, with a launch targeted for the latter part of this year or the first half of 2025. This information comes courtesy of Autocar Professional's report. Industry insiders suggest TVS has a modest sales target of 1,000 CNG scooters per month. This launch aligns with the company's goal of offering a wider range of cleaner fuel options to its customers and reducing its overall carbon footprint.

While TVS remains tight-lipped about the U740 project, a company spokesperson did acknowledge the company's interest in exploring various technologies, including CNG, EVs, and multi-fuel options. However, the spokesperson emphasized the focus on launching an electric vehicle, an internal combustion engine vehicle, and an electric three-wheeler this year, as communicated during a previous investor call. TVS Motor Company, known for its robust research and development department, boasts one of the most diverse product portfolios in the Indian two-wheeler market.

Currently, TVS holds the third-largest position in the Indian two-wheeler market with an 18% share and annual sales of 3.15 million units. They are also the second-largest scooter manufacturer, accounting for one in four scooters sold nationwide. Their annual sales break down to roughly 1 million motorcycles and half a million scooters.

TVS's entry into the CNG scooter segment will be a development worth watching.
