Maruti Suzuki-Toyota strategic alliance pans out for promoting a mutual supply of vehicles not just for India but also globally. It was a matter of time before MS would launch the MPV based on the new Toyota Innova Hycross. Invicto will be based on Toyota’s TNGA-C platform. The re-badged Innova Hycross would be the most expensive product in Maruti Suzukis' portfolio, whose bookings will commence on June 19.
Maruti Suzuki, in recent times, shaping its brand image by offering premium and lifestyle products to the customer. “Traditionally, so far, we have been looking distinctly at an MPV buyer and an SUV buyer. However, in this segment, the more we researched into it, found that there was a segment for a premium, three-row vehicle buyer, and it seems to be having very strong cross consideration. In that regard, it appears to be a single segment with similar requirements, similar motives to buy and similar income category", says Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director - Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.
Nothing significant will be changed apart from the MS design language, which will most likely feature a front grille based on Grand Vitara. Interior layout and tech would also be just like the ongoing Innova Hycross. The engine and powertrain option will be borrowed from Hycross'. The first would be a strong hybrid 2.0-litre engine producing 183hp of power that comes mated to the e-CVT transmission. Second, a non-hybrid efficient 2.0-litre petrol unit, which produces 173hp of power, is also expected to be offered on entry-level trims, mated to a CVT transmission.
The price of the Invicto non-hybrid version is expected to be launched around 18 lakhs, whereas the strong-hybrid would cost above 25 lakhs. How Maruti Suzuki fares against the legacy name of Innova and how well the strategic partnership helps both manufacturers will be the test of time.
