What to expect from the Audi SQ8 India launch

Audi India will launch the SQ8 on March 17, adding a performance-focused middle layer to its flagship SUV range. It will slot neatly between the standard Q8 and the more extreme RS Q8. Expect it to be priced at around Rs 1.9 crore ex-showroom, given that the Q8 starts at Rs 1.13 crore and the RS Q8 sits at Rs 2.34 crore.

A detuned V8, but only just

The SQ8 shares its 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 with the RS Q8. Here, however, it produces 500bhp and 770Nm, compared to the RS Q8’s 631bhp and 850Nm. That still makes it properly quick. Audi claims 0 to 100kmph in 4.1 seconds, which is only half a second slower than the RS Q8. An 8-speed automatic gearbox sends power to all four wheels via Audi’s quattro system.

For context, the standard Q8 uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 335bhp and 500Nm. The SQ8 therefore, sits exactly where you would expect it to in the hierarchy.

Sharper detailing outside

Visually, the SQ8 distinguishes itself through subtle but deliberate changes. There is a silver surround for the large grille, silver inserts within it and matching detailing on the bumper intakes, door trims and mirror housings.

Internationally, the SQ8 runs on 21 to 23-inch wheels. The India spec is likely to get at least 21-inch alloys. Carbon ceramic brakes are available globally, though it remains to be seen if Audi will bring them here. The silhouette remains identical to the Q8. The difference is in the finish rather than the form.

Sportier cabin touches

Inside, the SQ8 adds Alcantara and leather upholstery, S-specific badging on the seats and steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and aluminium door sill trims.

The familiar twin-screen MMI system continues, along with a 12.3 inch digital driver display featuring S-specific graphics. Equipment is expected to include multi-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, head up display and a Bang and Olufsen sound system. Heated, ventilated and massage front seats should also be part of the package.

The positioning

The SQ8 is unlikely to chase outright drama like the RS Q8. Instead, it offers most of the V8 character in a slightly more restrained package. For buyers who want serious pace without stepping into full RS territory, this could be the sweet spot. Now it comes down to how Audi prices and specs it for India.
