The Volkswagen Golf GTI is now the fastest front-wheel-drive production car to lap the Nurburgring, setting a lap time of 7:44.523 around the 20.832km track. With this, it has dethroned the Honda Civic Type R, which was the previous record holder with a time of 7:44.881 set in 2023.
The Golf GTI Edition 50 is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 320bhp, making it the most powerful production Golf GTI model to date. It can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in just 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 270kmph. It is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with power sent exclusively to the front wheels.
The Edition 50 sits 15mm lower than the standard Golf and 5mm lower than the regular GTI. It gets a MacPherson front axle and a four-link rear axle setup. Other upgrades include a lightweight R Performance Akrapovic exhaust with titanium end cans. Putting the power down are Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres wrapped around 19-inch forged alloy wheels.
Volkswagen test and development driver Benjamin Leuchter was behind the wheel for this incredible drive. Having extensive Nurburgring experience and deep familiarity with the Golf GTI, he explained how the Nürburgring is one of the most “unique” tracks in the world with its bends, jumps, and technical sections, and how the Golf GTI handled it effortlessly thanks to its balanced setup and potent engine.
He emphasised how the Golf GTI Edition 50 is not just an anniversary model, but a proper performance machine and an embodiment of 50 years of innovation and GTI heritage.
Over its 50-year history, the GTI nameplate has become synonymous with pure driving pleasure and strong, potent engines. It has been one of the most successful performance cars ever, with over 2.5 million GTIs sold over the years, and with this milestone accomplishment, it sets the bar high for its competitors.
