Renntech V12 SEC: The Ultimate Mercedes C126 resto-mod!

Renntech, the Florida-based performance specialist known for its deep Mercedes-Benz expertise, has revealed an extraordinary restomod project called the SEC V12 Widebody. This is not just a modified classic coupe. It is a complete reimagining of one of Mercedes’ most elegant grand tourers, rebuilt with serious power and modern engineering.

At the heart of the Sledgehammer sits a heavily reworked version of Mercedes-Benz’s legendary M120 V12 engine. Originally famous for powering high-performance halo cars in the 1990s, this engine has now been expanded to a massive 7.5 litres. Renntech’s reengineering pushes output to around 650bhp and 881Nm of torque, making it one of the largest naturally aspirated V12 engines currently in production form.

Unlike modern turbocharged performance engines, this V12 relies purely on displacement and precision engineering. The motor is hand-built and fitted with specially designed components, including equal-length exhaust headers, to deliver both strong performance and a distinctive, rich exhaust note. The result is a car that promises instant throttle response and a smooth yet commanding power delivery.

The foundation of this project is the Mercedes-Benz C126 SEC, the coupe version of the iconic W126 S-Class from the 1980s. Known for its clean lines and understated luxury, the SEC has always been admired for its timeless design. Renntech has preserved that elegance while adding a dramatic new visual presence.

A bespoke widebody kit transforms the car’s stance. The extended wheel arches, aggressive front and rear bumpers, and carefully integrated aerodynamic elements give the Sledgehammer a muscular look without compromising its classic identity. Custom forged wheels fill the arches perfectly, enhancing both stability and road presence.

However, this build goes far beyond cosmetic upgrades. Each Sledgehammer begins as a complete frame-up restoration. The chassis, suspension, braking system and drivetrain are comprehensively upgraded to match the immense performance of the 7.5-litre V12. The goal is not just straight-line speed but a balanced driving experience that feels composed and confident.

Production will be extremely limited, with only 12 examples planned worldwide. Each car will be built to order, allowing buyers to personalise interior materials, finishes and other details to suit their preferences. This level of exclusivity ensures that every Sledgehammer will feel unique.

Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2027. While official pricing has not been announced, the craftsmanship, engineering depth and rarity suggest it will occupy a premium segment aimed at serious collectors and enthusiasts.

The name Sledgehammer pays homage to the legendary high-performance Mercedes models of the past that combined everyday usability with overwhelming power. Renntech’s interpretation follows the same philosophy, blending the timeless elegance of the SEC coupe with the brute force of a large-capacity V12.

In an automotive era increasingly dominated by downsizing and electrification, the Sledgehammer stands apart. It celebrates large displacement, mechanical purity and old-school performance in a package that respects its heritage while embracing modern engineering standards. For those who appreciate classic design paired with uncompromised power, this may be one of the most compelling restomod projects in recent memory.
