BMW F 450 GS breaks cover

BMW Motorrad has unveiled its newest model of the GS family, the BMW F 450 GS, at EICMA 2025 in Milan. Designed for riders seeking adventure without being overwhelmed by size or power, this bike combines agility, reliability, and the iconic GS look. It targets riders in the 48 hp A2 licence class, making it accessible to newer riders while still offering the excitement expected from a BMW adventure bike. The F 450 GS will be made in India by TVS, for the world, and it is expected to launch in India next year.

Engine and Performance

The BMW F 450 GS is powered by a newly developed 420cc twin-cylinder engine. Unlike many smaller adventure bikes, this engine retains the character and performance of BMW’s larger machines. It produces 47.3bhp at 8750rpm and 43Nm of torque at 6750rpm. It has a 135° crankpin offset and a balance shaft, to minimises vibrations. Despite its performance, the F 450 GS remains efficient, consuming just 3.8 L/100 km, with a 14-litre fuel tank that allows for a range of over 350km (claimed figures). The six-speed gearbox can be had with an optional Quickshifter (Shift Assistant Pro) allows clutchless upshifts. On top-spec versions, the Easy Ride Clutch lets riders manage many situations without pulling the clutch lever, making city commuting or technical off-road maneuvers less tiring.

Chassis, Suspension, and Brakes

The F 450 GS rides on a tubular steel frame, using the engine as a stressed member to increase rigidity while keeping the weight low. Its kerb weight is around 178kg, which helps it remain nimble both on the road and off it. The front suspension features a 43 mm KYB upside-down fork, while the rear uses a hollow cast aluminium swingarm with a central spring strut, offering smooth travel and excellent control over bumps and rough terrain. Riders benefit from cast aluminium wheels — 19-inch at the front and 17-inch at the rear — fitted with tyres capable of handling both paved and dirt surfaces. Braking is handled by a 310 mm front disc with a Brembo four-piston caliper and a 240 mm rear disc, supported by BMW’s ABS Pro, which works even when the bike is leaning, ensuring safe stops on all surfaces.

Design and Features

The F 450 GS carries the unmistakable GS design language, featuring a high-beak front, wide handlebars, and a distinctive LED headlight with X-shaped daytime running lights. Its ergonomics strike a balance between comfort and off-road capability. The standard seat height of 845 mm can be adjusted with optional lower or higher seats, accommodating a wide range of riders.

A 6.5-inch full-color TFT display sits at the heart of the cockpit, offering navigation, music, and smartphone connectivity. A USB-C charging port ensures devices stay powered during long rides. BMW also offers multiple variants—Basic, Exclusive, Sport, and Trophy—allowing riders to choose from a simple commuter setup to a fully equipped off-road machine with cross-spoke wheels, rally windscreen, and the Easy Ride Clutch system.

Versatility and Market Positioning

The F 450 GS sits at the entry point of BMW’s GS lineup, effectively replacing the older G 310 GS. Its lightweight, nimble design combined with adventure-ready features makes it suitable for a wide range of activities — from daily commuting to weekend touring or light off-road exploration. BMW has emphasised accessibility without compromising the adventure DNA that defines the GS family. With production collaboration in India via TVS Motor Company, BMW aims to make the F 450 GS more affordable for emerging markets, bringing the GS experience to more riders worldwide.
