Just how many conveniences can you cramp in a car? A few too many says Tata as they introduce the Tiago i-CNG AMT variant for the masses. Looking for a CNG vehicle with bootspace? Checked. Good efficiency for your daily commute? Check. Convenience of an automatic? Yes, and that’s what they’ve given up with this updated Tiago.
Starting with a flip of the key, the Tiago i-CNG AMT defaults to CNG mode, saving petrol during ignition. While not the most refined or peppy engine, it offers a smooth, linear power delivery, with a slight dip in the mid-range. It might not set speed records, but for navigating congested city traffic, it's perfectly adequate.
Switch to petrol for a leisurely pace, and you'll find minimal difference between the fuels. Both acceleration and part-throttle responses are decent, keeping you in sync with city traffic flow. However, a more spirited driving style reveals the limits of CNG power, and also that of the AMT transmission.
Yes it does exhibit the characteristic head-nod during gear changes, but it compensates by readily downshifting to keep the engine in its optimal power zone. Additionally, manual shifting on the gear lever provide a satisfying sense of manual control.
Tata’s patented twin-cylinder set up was introduced to the Tiago and Tigor line-up last year itself and this automatic benefits from that set up too. With the two 30-litre tanks under the boot floor, 107 litres of cargo space is liberated. While that might not sound like much, it is good enough for a few soft bags and it’s still better than not having any space at all. And Tata hasn’t forgotten about the spare tyre either. It’s mounted underneath the car and can be lowered by loosening a bolt in the boot floor.
Like it did with the Altroz, Tata is offering the Tiago CNG AMT in multiple trims, including the near top-spec XZ+. This means it barely loses out on any features in comparison to its petrol counterpart (petrol Tiago XZ (O) gets alloys). It packs in a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, a Harman audio system, auto climate control, auto wipers, electrically adjustable and foldable wing mirrors, a rear wiper/washer, a rear parking camera, TPMS and more. Standard safety kit includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, ISOFIX mounts and rear parking
There’s not much to report in terms of interior changes in comparison to the petrol auto, save for the CNG button in the centre console, the two fuel gauges in the instrument cluster and the revised Tata logo on the steering. The Tiago has a spacious cabin and fit/finish is acceptable for the price. The body-coloured surrounds on the outer AC vents do a good job of sprucing up this black and grey dual-tone cabin theme.
Exterior changes are also limited to the badges – there’s an iCNG badge on the boot, a ‘50 lakh cars’ milestone badge on the rear doors and the revised Tata logo at the back. The Tiago CNG AMT is being offered in four colours – Tornado Blue (which you see here), Flame Red, Daytona Grey and Opal White.
The Tiago isn’t here to replicate the driving manners of a German luxobarge, but is here to help you save. Consider the current fuel prices in Mumbai, the running cost per kilometre comes to Rs 3.5, almost one third of a petrol equivalent. Not only is CNG significantly cheaper, but it also boasts lower emissions, making it a more eco-friendly choice.
The Tiago i-CNG AMT's combination of automatic convenience, lower running costs with CNG, and a feature-rich interior makes it a compelling option for urban commuters. So, when navigating your next city roundabout, keep the Tiago CNG automatic on your radar. It might just be the perfect blend of practicality and affordability you've been searching for.
