Land Rover is set to make its mark in the Stock category of the Dakar Rally under the iconic Defender nameplate, starting from the 2026 season. This move serves as a bold statement of the Defender’s off-road prowess, providing the perfect platform to showcase its capability in one of the world’s toughest endurance races. As the first-ever four-wheel-drive off-roader in history, the Defender’s entry into the Dakar Rally is a significant milestone, further cementing its legacy as an off-road icon.
Land Rover is yet to confirm the powertrain option they will opt for, the Dakar Rally. Leaving the powertrain, Defender has an aluminium architecture known as the Defender's D7X platform. The Defender comes with an aluminium monocoque construction, three times stiffer than a normal traditional way of making an SUV.
Defender has not announced the driver line-up but said they are looking for experienced drivers to lead their program. The idea of recruiting a female driver as part of the team is also under consideration.
Defender is the official vehicle partner for the Dakar Rally from the 2025 season. Land Rover has supplied 20 SUVs to ferry race officials and VIPs. This might also help Land Rover under what kind of challenges the Defender might face in the 2026 season.
