Toyota Prius Sets Guinness World Record With 39.5 kmpl Mileage

Imagine your car gave a mileage of around 39 kmpl. Wouldn't that be amazing? Toyota has done that with their new Prius. While the general mileage of the car is 24.23 kmpl (57 mpg), Toyota made a Guinness world record way above that number. What was the number? 39.5 kmpl. Know all about this record ahead

The Journey

The mind-boggling mileage was achieved by the Prius on a coast-to-coast journey from Los Angeles to New York City. This 5149.9 km (3,200) journey was between two of the United States' largest cities on the eastern and western coast. It went way beyond the general runs that were done to establish a Guinness World Record.

How Did They Do It?

The most significant contributor to the record was the driving technique. It was not done by a random driver; Wayne Gerdes was behind the wheel. Who is he? He is a well-known expert in hypermiling. It is not his first record as he has done a similar record of achieving 32.56 kmpl (76.6 mpg) in a Kia Niro hybrid and 28.9 kmpl (68 mpg) in a Volkswagen Passat TDI. The Prius used in the attempt is powered by a Toyota Hybrid System and a 2.0L engine, with an output of 194 horsepower and gets an FWD drivetrain.

Methods Used

The record was done by hypermiling. This technique involves multiple measures like limiting speed, reducing accelerator use, disabling HVAC, keeping windows closed and preferring the best roads.

Wayne's Statement

"For a record attempt like this, it's a lot of planning. And, if things change, you have to switch up your plan. Reroute. Figure out what you're going to be able to do to achieve that goal."
said Wayne Gerdes, Hypermiler.

What Toyota VP Said

Michael Tripp, Toyota Vehicle Marketing group VP, said, "The Prius has impressed us for the past 23 years, and it continues to wow us today. The world record for the lowest l/100 km is just one more proof point that the Prius truly is an engineering marvel."
