July 2024 Sales: Maruti, Hyundai, Tata Lose Numbers But Toyota, Mahindra Gain!

The sales numbers for July are here, and they don't look good. The car industry has seen a decrease in sales, with the top automakers losing massive numbers. Let us look at the top companies one by one:

Maruti Suzuki 

Maruti Suzuki India reported that their total domestic passenger vehicle sales were 1,37,463 units in July. This number was  9.64 per cent lower than the July 2023 number of 1,52,126 units. 

They had a surprise increase in demand in its small hatchback segment comprising the Alto and S-Presso as they sold 9,960 units in the previous month, which was higher than the 9,590 units sold in the same month last year. 

Their actual showstoppers, the compact cars, were the ones that took a real hit, with only 58,682 units being sold compared to 67,102 units in July 2023. The cars in this segment include Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR. The SUV and MUV segment didn't fare very well either, with their sales reducing to 56,302 compared to the  62,049 models sold in the previous year.  This segment has the Ertiga, Fronx, Brezza, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6.

Hyundai and Tata

Hyundai Motor India maintained its second position, though it saw a decrease in the number of units sold by 3 per cent, with the total number reaching 49,013 units. For reference, they sold 50,701 units in July 2023. Coming in third, Tata Motors also experienced a dip of 11 per cent in sales, with their sales number standing at 70,161 units last month compared to 78,844 units in the same month of last year.

Mahindra and Kia

There were two gainers in the market in July 2024. There were Mahindra and Kia. Mahindra & Mahindra, however, achieved a 15 per cent rise in passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market, with their total number reaching 41,623 units last month. They had sold 36,205 units in July of 2023. Kia India also experienced a slight increase of 2.5 per cent in sales, with its total sales increasing from 20,002 units in July 2023 to 20,507 units in July.

Toyota Had Their Best Month

Toyota Kirloskar Motor enjoyed a stellar growth of 44% on a year-on-year basis in the total wholesales, getting 31,656 units in July. The Japanese Marquee claimed it was its best monthly sales in India ever. For reference, the carmaker was able to sell 21,911 units in both domestic and exports in July of last year.
