JioThings: Behind Jio’s Vision to Take Over Car Tech

If you thought Jio was only a telecom or network player, my friend, you are wrong. Jio has entered the tech in our beloved cars and will control more parts soon. How will that happen? Mr Mohan Raju, Vice President & Vertical Head IotT, JIo, had a detailed answer at the Kommune EV & Autotech Innovation Forum 2024. Here is how their plan will be divided:

Connected Cars

The first aspect is connected car tech, where Jio plans to connect automobiles to other devices like mobile phones. There are four main features of this tech. First is Vehicle Diagnostics & Management, which can perform remote monitoring of vehicle health, including engine status, battery health, and diagnostic trouble code (DTC) alerts. The second is predictive maintenance alerts, which can predict and notify when a vehicle requires maintenance or repairs, minimising downtime. Geo-fencing and Route Monitoring is a feature that will allow setting geo-fences and monitoring vehicle routes to ensure drivers stay within assigned areas, helping to prevent unauthorised use or detours. The last is Driver Behavior Monitoring, which can track driver behaviour metrics such as speeding, harsh braking, and idling, promoting safer driving practices.

Smart Fleet Management

Fleet Management is an important B2B parallel for Jio's automotive plans. It Combines sustainability and the power of 5G connectivity. This includes Driver Behaviour, Video telematics, Cargo Tracking and integration with enterprise systems. Video telematics includes real-time tracking, analysis and safety monitoring. Cargo Tracking helps customers track their packages in real-time. The Integration with Enterprise systems involves API-driven connectivity to ensure smooth data exchange and synchronisation with existing logistics and inventory & order processing.

Smart EV Charging

The charging infrastructure is the most crucial aspect of EVs to be addressed in India today. Jio wants to build intelligent EV charging tech. This will be divided into four parallels. First is Fleet Charging for delivery services, taxi companies, or corporate fleets. Second is public Charging in places like parking lots, shopping centres, and roadside rest areas. Smart Residential Charging optimises charging schedules based on factors such as electricity rates and the user's driving patterns. Workplace Charging involves allocating and scheduling charging sessions, ensuring access to and efficient use of resources.

Battery Management System

Jio plans to make a Battery Management System (BMS) to track energy efficiency, voltage stability, and power output parameters. It comes with Predictive Maintenance to detect early signs of battery degradation, anomalies, or potential failures, allowing for proactive maintenance interventions. It gets Data Analytics and Insights to provide insights into battery behaviour, optimise charging strategies, and improve overall system efficiency. It also ensures safe temperature and voltage ranges, provides protection against overcharging and over-discharging, and thermal management systems.

Battery Swapping

Battery swapping is one of the best interim solutions to address the problem of long charging times in electric two-wheelers. Jio has planned solutions in this sector as well. The battery swapping reach will help reduce service costs, increase the output of the vehicles, and allow every vehicle to have a higher range.

Jio AvniOS

Jio's Avni OS will power the digital vehicle cluster of cars. It will get multiple features like Hello JIo, Vehicle Health info, personalised preferences and a customisable OS. Hello, Jio is like Google's personal assistant that can control functions like adjusting climate settings, infotainment systems, and much more. The vehicle Health Information feature gives real-time updates on tyre pressure, battery status, engine diagnostics, and upcoming maintenance requirements. The Personalised Preferences feature allows for personalised experiences- selecting preferred temperature settings or retrieving customised saved locations for navigation. Customisable OS involves OEMs having the flexibility to customise a mobility OS for vehicle clusters according to their specific requirements and branding.

JioThings App

Jio has made a device called JioMotive, an OBD II plug-and-play dongle that can be connected to your car. Users can Plug the device into their car, download the JioThings App, and activate it with JioEverywhere Connect to unlock a one-stop solution for all vehicle-related needs—from vehicle monitoring and maintenance to keeping track of maintenance requests, storing all vehicle-related documents, and more. The JioThings app offers features like One-stop Vehicle Management, Trip Management, Driver Management, and Navigation and routing.

JioXplor

The JioXplor is the maps app from the Jio house of products, which claims to be the 'one platform for all your location needs'. It gives users multiple functions. You can use it for geolocation, which means it will allow you to return a device's location without relying on GPS, using geospatial data from cell towers and Wi-Fi nodes. It also gets features like Geocoding, Jio Xplor M2M, and Indoor Navigation.
