India car sales stay strong in December 2025 as momentum carries on

India’s passenger vehicle market ended 2025 on a high note, with December continuing the strong sales momentum seen throughout the festive quarter. A mix of policy tailwinds, stable demand for SUVs and improving supply conditions helped most major manufacturers close the year on a positive note.

Lower GST, income tax rebates announced earlier in the year and cumulative repo rate cuts of 125 basis points have continued to support demand, keeping showroom footfalls healthy even outside the traditional festive window.

Maruti Suzuki closes the year at record levels.

Maruti Suzuki India reported total sales of 217,854 units in December 2025, including exports, marking a 22 percent year-on-year growth. Domestic sales reached an all-time monthly high of 182,165 units, while exports stood at 25,739 units. Sales to other OEMs accounted for 9,950 units.

The company ended the calendar year 2025 with its highest-ever total sales of 2,351,139 units, including a record 395,648 units in exports. Demand remained strong enough to leave dealers with just three days of inventory at year-end, with waiting periods stretching up to 45 days for several models. The Dzire emerged as the best-selling model of CY2025, while the Baleno led sales in December.

Hyundai and Tata post steady growth.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported wholesales of 50,519 units in December 2025, up 14.1 per cent year-on-year. For the October to December quarter, Tata’s passenger vehicle sales rose 22.3 per cent to 171,013 units. The company closed CY2025 with its fifth consecutive year of record sales, delivering 587,218 units, including its highest-ever annual EV volume of 81,125 units.

Mahindra and Toyota continue strong run.

Kia, Renault show sharp gains, MG slips.

Market outlook

With the calendar year 2025 closing on a positive note, industry players remain optimistic about 2026. Continued policy support, stable interest rates and sustained SUV demand are expected to keep growth on track, even as manufacturers prepare for new product launches and tighter emission norms.
