Are EVs Really the Future? Porsche Doesn’t Think So

Do you have sleepless nights worrying about how EVs will take over ICE? Well, I have some good news for you. Porsche has announced that they will launch ICE versions of their EVs in the future. This decision comes after a drop in sales of the Taycan, their flagship EV, while demand for the ICE-powered 718 has surged. This shows many consumers aren’t ready to pay the high prices of EVs just yet. This makes one thing clear: ICE engines are here to say, at least for the forcible future.

During a recent conference call, Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke stated: “A lot of customers in the premium and luxury segment are looking in the direction of combustion-engined cars, there’s a clear trend. We will refresh our combustion engine cars, including the Panamera and the Cayenne, and of course, we will continue to rely on plug-in hybrids.”

The EV Market Isn’t as Stable as Expected

The auto industry is at a crossroads. There is no single clear path forward, and the market is shifting unpredictably. Many car companies assumed the early surge in EV demand meant an all-electric future was inevitable. However, that excitement has started to fade.

For EVs to truly take over, they need to become more affordable, but high costs remain a major barrier for now. Meanwhile, performance car enthusiasts argue that EVs still can’t replicate the raw driving experience of traditional ICE-powered cars.

What Comes Next?

Was Toyota right all along with its hybrid-first approach? And what does this mean for companies like Tesla, VinFast, and BYD, which are betting everything on EVs? The auto industry's future remains uncertain, with no clear winner between EVs, hybrids, and hydrogen-powered cars. Only time will tell which technology will dominate the roads.
