JSW MG Motor India has achieved what many plans have set as goals for years later; they have managed to increase the EV share of their sales to 40%. This was made possible due to the stellar performance of their ZS EV and Comet EV. It has also become the first OEM in India to achieve this feat. Let us look at it in detail:
Sales Numbers
JSW MG Motor India reported sales of 4,644 units in June 2024. Out of these, 1,861 were electric vehicles (EVs), making up 40 per cent of the total sales for the month. These came from the two MG EVs: the Comet and the ZS EV. It also announced that the ZS EV, its first all-electric SUV in India, achieved its highest-ever monthly sales in July. However, it did not specify the number of units sold.
The news was not all positive, as the brand saw a 9 per cent decline in sales compared to June 2023. In that month, their sales were 5125 units. They were even lower on a month-by-month basis, as their sales in May 2024 were 4769 units.
MG Comet
The MG Comet is a new, compact EV that MG Motor India introduced in May 2024. With a starting price of Rs. 6.99 lakh, it is one of the most affordable EVs in India. It has a 17.3kWh battery offering a 200km range and a motor producing 41 bhp and 110 Nm of torque. It is a good partner for your city driving and comes with three drive modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. The MG Comet prioritizes safety with features like ABS, EBD, and Hill Hold Control. It offers tech features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It sold around 900 units last month.
MG ZS EV
The MG ZS EV is MG's electric SUV for India. Its best feature surely is the driving range of 461 km on a single charge with the help of its 50.3kWh battery pack. The MG ZS EV is powered by an electric motor delivering 173 bhp and 280Nm of torque. It is also safe, evident by its 5-star NCAP rating and features like 6 airbags. On the feature front, it gets a panoramic sunroof, a large touchscreen infotainment system with MG's i-Smart connectivity, and multiple colour options. You can bring home a ZS EV at a starting price of ₹18.98 lakh, its top model reaching ₹25.44 lakh.
Future Plans
The JSW MG Motor Joint venture plans to launch 5 new models by 2025. Two of the models will fall into the premium category, while the other three will be aimed at the mainstream market. The first product of these would be a crossover or CUV, that is expected to launch during the festive season.
