The Chevrolet Corvette is steadily edging closer to Europe’s performance benchmarks, with the introduction of the new Grand Sport and Grand Sport X variants. Alongside these models comes a significant mechanical update in the form of an all-new LS6 V8 engine, which is set to be introduced across the entire 2027 model year C8 Corvette line-up, effectively replacing the outgoing powertrain.

This move signals Chevrolet’s continued intent to position the Corvette as a serious alternative to established rivals such as the Porsche 911. Over the past few generations, the Corvette has evolved from being a straight-line performance icon into a far more rounded sports car, and this latest update reinforces that trajectory. With improved engineering and broader capabilities, the gap between the American contender and its European counterparts appears to be narrowing further.

At the centre of this update is the new 6.7-litre naturally aspirated LS6 V8 engine. It produces 527bhp and 705Nm of torque, making it the most torque-rich naturally aspirated V8 ever fitted to a production Corvette. The focus here isn’t just outright power, but also delivering strong, accessible performance across the rev range—something that aligns with the Corvette’s evolving character as a more sophisticated and usable performance machine.

Power continues to be sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, a setup that has already proven its capability in delivering rapid shifts and strong performance. With this configuration, the Corvette is expected to achieve a 0 to 100kmph sprint time of under three seconds, placing it firmly in the territory of some of the quickest sports cars currently on sale.

Visually, the Grand Sport builds on the Corvette’s mid-engine architecture with a wide-body stance that draws inspiration from higher-performance variants. Heritage-inspired design elements play a key role, including signature fender hash marks, centre stripes and exclusive badging that reference earlier Grand Sport models. The model also introduces new exterior colour options such as Admiral Blue Metallic and Pitch Gray Metallic, along with multiple combinations of stripes and accents that allow for extensive personalisation. Unique 10-spoke forged aluminium wheels, available in finishes like Pearl Nickel and Gloss Black, further distinguish the Grand Sport, while optional carbon-fibre wheels reduce unsprung mass.

Inside, the focus remains firmly on the driver. The cabin is built around a cockpit-style layout, with a driver-centric command centre and large digital displays complemented by performance-focused apps and drive modes. Material quality is stepped up through the trim hierarchy, with options ranging from Mulan leather upholstery to Napa leather and sueded microfiber finishes in higher trims. Technology features include wireless phone charging, Google built-in compatibility, and premium Bose sound systems with up to 14 speakers depending on the variant.

Chevrolet is also offering a bespoke Launch Edition package, designed to give the Grand Sport a more exclusive feel. This includes a Santorini Blue-dipped interior theme with contrasting red stitching, embossed headrest logos, and unique interior plaques. Additional detailing such as custom stitching, leather-wrapped surfaces and distinctive interior badging reinforces the sense of individuality, while multiple interior colour combinations — including asymmetrical themes — further enhance customisation options.

In addition to the standard Grand Sport, Chevrolet is also introducing the Grand Sport X variant. This version takes a step further by incorporating a hybrid all-wheel-drive system, adding an extra layer of performance and traction. The inclusion of electrification not only enhances acceleration and grip but also reflects a broader shift in performance car engineering, where hybrid systems are increasingly being used to augment traditional combustion engines.

The Grand Sport X, therefore, expands the Corvette’s appeal by combining the raw character of a naturally aspirated V8 with the benefits of modern hybrid technology. This dual approach allows Chevrolet to cater to enthusiasts seeking traditional performance, as well as those interested in cutting-edge advancements.

Overall, these updates underline Chevrolet’s ambition to elevate the Corvette’s standing in the global sports car segment. By refining its powertrain, introducing hybrid technology, and continuing to push performance boundaries, the Corvette is positioning itself as a more complete and competitive package than ever before.
