Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift Launched In India At ₹2.20 Crore, Gets Plug-In Hybrid Power For The First Time

There are luxury cars, and then there is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. For decades, the flagship sedan has been the benchmark for automotive luxury, introducing technologies that eventually find their way into the rest of the industry. Whether it's safety systems, driver assistance features, digital interfaces or comfort innovations, the S-Class has consistently served as Mercedes-Benz's rolling technology showcase. Now, Mercedes-Benz India has launched the facelifted S-Class at a starting price of ₹2.20 crore (ex-showroom). While the styling changes may appear subtle at first glance, the updates underneath the skin are far more significant. Most notably, the S-Class is now available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in India for the first time, bringing electrification to the brand's flagship limousine.

Available as the S 450e, the updated S-Class combines enhanced efficiency, more technology and even greater rear-seat comfort while retaining everything that has made the nameplate one of the most respected luxury sedans in the world.

Plug-In Hybrid Power Comes To The S-Class

Initially, the 2026 S-Class is coing to India only in a plug-in hybrid avatar. As the S 450e. It gets a 3-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine, an electric motor and a 25.4kWh battery pack. Together, the system develops a combined 381bhp and 650Nm of torque, ensuring that despite its focus on comfort and refinement, the S-Class remains effortlessly quick. Mercedes claims a 0 to 100kmph sprint time of 5.2 seconds, impressive for a limousine that tips the scales at well over two tonnes. However, outright performance isn't the headline here. The plug-in hybrid system allows the S-Class to travel up to 100km on electric power alone under WLTP testing conditions. For many owners, that means daily commuting could potentially be completed without using the petrol engine at all. Once the battery charge is depleted, the car seamlessly transitions into hybrid operation, combining electric and petrol power to maximise efficiency. Charging capabilities have also improved. The S-Class supports DC fast charging at up to 60kW, allowing the battery to be replenished significantly quicker than before. Mercedes claims a fuel-efficiency figure of 34.5kmpl, making the S 450e one of the most efficient luxury sedans currently on sale in India.

Subtle Design Changes, Familiar Presence

Mercedes has wisely resisted the temptation to radically redesign its flagship sedan. The facelifted S-Class retains the elegant proportions and commanding road presence that have defined the current-generation model. Instead of reinventing the design, Mercedes has focused on refinement.

The front and rear bumpers have been revised, while new alloy wheel designs help freshen the appearance. The most noticeable changes are found in the lighting elements, with the headlamps and tail lamps now featuring illuminated three-pointed-star graphics that add a modern touch while reinforcing the brand's identity. The Digital Light headlamps also continue to be among the most advanced lighting systems available on any production car. For the first time in India, Mercedes-Benz is offering the S-Class with two distinct styling personalities. Buyers can choose between the more elegant MANUFAKTUR specification, which focuses on bespoke luxury and exclusivity, or the sportier AMG Line package that adds more aggressive bumpers, AMG-specific styling elements and a sharper visual stance.

The MANUFAKTUR version further enhances exclusivity through special paint finishes, unique upholstery options and bespoke trim finishes, allowing owners to personalise their flagship sedan to a much greater degree than before.

The result is a car that remains unmistakably an S-Class. It is sophisticated, understated and intentionally free from the aggressive styling cues that dominate much of today's luxury car market.

One Of The Most Advanced Cabins In The Industry

Step inside and the updates become immediately apparent. At the heart of the dashboard sits a massive 14.4-inch OLED portrait touchscreen, which serves as the centrepiece of Mercedes-Benz's latest MBUX infotainment system. The display offers sharper graphics, faster processing speeds and improved responsiveness compared to before. Ahead of the driver is a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster, capable of displaying navigation, vehicle information and driver-assistance data through a highly configurable interface.

The latest MBUX software incorporates enhanced AI-based functionality capable of learning user preferences and adapting settings accordingly. Voice commands have become more natural, connected-car functionality has expanded and over-the-air software updates ensure the vehicle can continue receiving improvements throughout its lifecycle.

The digital experience is impressive, but Mercedes has been careful not to let technology overwhelm luxury. Premium materials, impeccable fit and finish, and a clean dashboard design ensure the cabin still feels like a luxury lounge rather than a rolling computer.

Rear-Seat Luxury Remains The Main Attraction

While the driver gets plenty of technology to enjoy, the S-Class continues to focus heavily on rear-seat occupants. The optional Executive Rear Seat package allows the left rear seat to recline by up to 43.5 degrees, transforming the rear compartment into something closer to a first-class airline suite than a traditional car seat. Extending calf supports, heating, ventilation and multiple massage programmes further elevate the experience.

Rear passengers also get dedicated entertainment systems in the form of dual 11.6-inch displays mounted behind the front seats. A 7-inch MBUX rear tablet allows occupants to control seat settings, climate functions, ambient lighting, sunblinds, navigation and media features without interacting with the main infotainment system.

Additional touches such as powered comfort doors, executive seating functions and extensive rear-seat customization options further reinforce the S-Class' reputation as one of the finest chauffeur-driven luxury cars available anywhere in the world.

For buyers who prefer being chauffeured, the rear cabin remains one of the most luxurious and technologically advanced spaces available in any automobile today.

Burmester 4D Audio And Next-Level Comfort

Another highlight is the Burmester 4D surround-sound system. Unlike conventional premium audio systems, the Burmester setup incorporates seat-mounted resonators that allow occupants to physically feel elements of the music, creating a more immersive listening experience. Mercedes has also devoted considerable attention to refinement. Additional insulation materials, enhanced acoustic measures and numerous engineering improvements help make the cabin even quieter than before. Ambient lighting has been upgraded and now extends across more areas of the cabin, creating a sophisticated atmosphere after dark. Combined with the S-Class' exceptional ride quality, the interior remains one of the most serene environments available on four wheels.

Technology Beyond The Screens

The S-Class has never been about screens alone. Standard equipment includes Mercedes-Benz's AIRMATIC air suspension, which continuously adapts to road conditions to deliver a supple ride. The luxury sedan also benefits from rear-wheel steering with up to 10 degrees of steering angle, helping improve manoeuvrability in tight urban environments while enhancing stability at higher speeds.

The facelifted model continues to offer Mercedes-Benz's advanced suite of driver-assistance systems, including Level 2 ADAS functionality. Digital Light headlamps, adaptive safety systems and an extensive array of active and passive safety technologies further reinforce the S-Class' reputation as one of the safest luxury cars on sale. Safety equipment is particularly impressive. The updated S-Class comes equipped with 15 airbags, including front airbags, side airbags, window airbags, rear-seat airbags and seat-cushion airbags. The latter help reduce occupant movement beneath the seatbelt during a collision and remain a rare feature even in the luxury segment. With 15 airbags on board, the facelifted S-Class now boasts the highest airbag count of any passenger vehicle currently on sale in India. Together, these systems work behind the scenes to make the S-Class feel smaller than it actually is around town, while maintaining the effortless stability expected of a flagship limousine on the highway.

Two Versions To Choose From

The facelifted S-Class is available in two versions in India. The standard Launch Edition is priced at ₹2.20 crore (ex-showroom), while the more exclusive MANUFAKTUR Edition costs ₹2.38 crore (ex-showroom). The MANUFAKTUR variant focuses on exclusivity, offering bespoke paint finishes, unique interior materials and additional customization options for buyers looking for a more personalised ownership experience.
