Mercedes-AMG Prepares to Launch Standalone Electric SUV

Mercedes-Benz has a lineup of 11 distinct SUVs globally, or 13 if you include the unique 'Coupe' iterations of the GLC and GLE. Soon, another model will join this extensive collection, marked by a significant departure from convention—this one is an exclusive creation by Mercedes-AMG and will be entirely electric.

For those who associate the name ‘AMG’ with roaring V8 coupes and performance-tuned sedans, the idea of an electric AMG SUV might seem unconventional. Prepare yourself: AMG is setting its sights firmly on electrification.

The Foundation of a New Era: AMG.EA Platform

This upcoming high-performance SUV will be constructed on the AMG.EA platform is an electric vehicle (EV) architecture designed to push performance limits. This innovative platform is also the base for AMG’s forthcoming flagship EV: a four-door model to replace the AMG GT 4 Door.

Central to the design is a set of compact axial-flux electric motors known for their power density, paired with a high-voltage battery engineered with performance in mind.

The Countdown Begins: What to Expect?

While the debut of the four-door electric vehicle is scheduled for 2025, Mercedes-AMG has indicated that testing for the SUV will commence this winter, signalling a likely 2026 release. The teaser image provided hints at muscular wheel arches and a sleek roofline, blending the ruggedness of an SUV with the elegance expected of an AMG creation.

Michael Schiebe, the chairman of Mercedes-AMG, emphasized the brand’s commitment to meeting customer demands while innovating: “SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the 'Born in Affalterbach' SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform. Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: 'AMG First, EV Second'."

The Future of AMG: A Dual Strategy

Despite AMG’s push into bespoke electric models, the legendary V8 is not being shelved entirely. Following the mixed reception of the C63’s four-cylinder hybrid setup, the CLE 63 coupe is rumoured to mark a return to the celebrated V8. This move reflects AMG’s understanding that while technology captivates, engine heritage remains at the core of its brand identity.
