Maruti Suzuki's Electric Gambit: The e Vitara Teased

Hold on to your charging cables, folks! Maruti Suzuki has given us a glimpse of the future with its first-ever electric SUV for India, the Maruti e Vitara. Slated to make its debut on January 17 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 (Auto Expo) in New Delhi.

Here’s the lowdown:

The Basics

The Maruti e Vitara is a five-seater electric SUV that promises to be as roomy as your favourite pair of cargo pants and twice as electrifying. The production version has inherited much of its DNA from the eVX concept, first revealed in Milan, Italy, though it’s ditched some of the sharper edges for a sleeker, more rounded design. Think less racecar more runway model.

Built on a Brand-New Platform

Codenamed YY8, this SUV sits atop a skateboard platform developed with Toyota. Yes, Toyota—Maruti's buddy in badge engineering. And because sharing is caring, Toyota will also roll out its version of the e Vitara, named the Urban Cruiser EV. Both models will be crafted in India and sent packing to international markets faster than you can say "global warming."

Juiced-Up Power Options

Maruti is offering two battery packs to suit your driving style:

  • 49kWh for the entry-level variants (perfect for city zips)
  • 61kWh for the premium trims, featuring an AWD setup called AllGrip-e—because, let’s face it, even EVs want to go off-road sometimes.

Rivals in Sight

The e Vitara has its crosshairs set on some heavy hitters, including the Hyundai Creta EV (also making a splash on January 17), the MG ZS EV, Tata’s Curvv EV, and Mahindra’s burly BE 6 SUVs. It’s a battle royale, and Maruti is suiting up.

Charge and Go

Speaking of suiting up, Maruti isn’t just stopping at EVs—it’s also working on a nationwide network of charging stations at its outlets, so you’ll never be far from a top-up. Details on pricing, bookings, and delivery will be revealed closer to launch, but we’re already pencilling in March 2025 as the big day for India, with Europe to follow in June.
