I don’t think anyone on the planet who hasn’t heard of the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the G-Wagon. It’s surprising how such a legendary vehicle has so few derivatives beyond a handful of one-off art pieces and special editions. But what if I told you we might soon see a Junior G-Class (with the “g” intentionally written in lowercase)?
A Surreal Experience in the G 580
Just a few days ago, I had the opportunity to sit inside the G 580, the fully electric version of the G-Class and the experience was nothing short of surreal. When you press the accelerator, you feel an instant surge of power that can easily catch you off guard. Yet, beyond that initial shock, there’s an undeniable thrill in experiencing such an electrifying performance.
However, in an urban jungle like Mumbai, I found the G 580’s size to be quite overwhelming. So, if Mercedes-Benz is considering blessing the world with a more compact version of the G-Class, we would be on board!
What Do We Know So Far?
Aside from a few teasers and a brief announcement about 1.5 years ago, Mercedes-Benz has remained relatively silent about the Junior g-Class project. Several key questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding how closely this smaller version will resemble its beefy sibling.
Will it feature a traditional body-on-frame platform or adopt a unibody design? Sometimes, I can’t help but imagine a scenario where Mercedes engineers reengineer the Maruti Suzuki Jimny as a mini G-Class, a fascinating concept, to say the least!

What to Expect from the Junior G-Class
While there is no official release date set for the Junior G-Class, we are excited about the potential vehicle possesses. It will undoubtedly maintain its commanding road presence and adrenaline-filled performance in a smaller package with a lower stance. We can only wait and see what Mercedes-Benz has in store, but the idea of a more compact, city-friendly G-Class is already to us!
