A Viral Escape: Evolving Back to Hampi in the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450d

The last time I visited Hampi in Karnataka was back in 2021, just as the world began to shake off the COVID-19 travel bans. Back then, we hit the road in the Mercedes-Benz GLE 250d, and it was a trip to remember with my team. The majestic Evolveback resort welcomed us, and we were instantly captivated by Hampi's rich history, religious significance, and breathtaking landscape peppered with ancient boulders. So, when the chance to return presented itself, I couldn't resist—this time rolling out with the squad in two luxurious flagships, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450d and 400d SUVs.

Our group was a delightful mix of personalities: the fabulous car-enthusiast couple Karan Kundra and Tejasswi Prakash; Gaurav, aka Technical Guruji; Rashi Singh, a talented actor from Hyderabad; Sara Khatri, a Delhi-based influencer; and Dr Anisha, an aspiring actress and influencer from Jaipur. I was the only one who knew everyone before this adventure, and my excitement for what lay ahead was through the roof!

We all arrived in Bangalore around the same time, where the GLS 450d awaited to whisk us away. The drive to Hampi is a scenic delight, with smooth stretches that tempt you to push the limits—reaching up to 250 kmph in certain spots! Towering windmills dotted the route, adding a calming touch to the journey, perfectly complemented by the crisp acoustics of the Burmester sound system. Thanks to the GLS's advanced air suspension, we arrived after the five-hour drive feeling as refreshed as when we'd started.

Along the way, we made a few Instagram-worthy stops and swapped drivers—though everyone was eager for their turn behind the wheel! Karan, known for his adventurous spirit on shows like Roadies, entertained us with road trip tales. Tejasswi surprised everyone by hitting a blistering 230 kmph on an empty stretch—a personal milestone for her! We felt even bolder on this thrilling drive with a doctor in our ranks.

Upon arriving at Evolveback, we were greeted by our private suites, complete with luxurious Jacuzzis and balconies the size of a 2BHK apartment in Mumbai. That evening, we indulged in a curated dining experience by the poolside, featuring a delectable fusion of South and North Indian cuisine. The lively conversation continued late into the night, but we knew we had an early start for a hot air balloon ride—one of Evolveback's unique offerings.

The following day, as we floated above Hampi's surreal landscape, the breathtaking rock formations reminded me of Cappadocia in Turkey. The view was a stunning canvas of scattered boulders and ancient architecture as if nature had carefully arranged each piece. Below us, the GLS 450d trailed gracefully, capturing the scene with a drone. The contrast between the gentle sway of the hot air balloon and the roar of the six-cylinder GLS engine was exhilarating.

Our pilot, an Englishman and a self-proclaimed Top Gear fan, impressed us with his skilful landing in an open field, joking that he sometimes "drifts" the balloon. It was a thrilling experience, though I jokingly freaked out Tejasswi by imagining a dramatic descent!

Hampi truly has the potential to rival Cappadocia with its incredible stories, ancient temples, and hot air balloon rides. We visited iconic sites like the Stone Chariot and the mesmerizing musical pillars, which showcase tales passionately narrated by historians. We climbed the 500 steps to the Hanuman Temple and felt an ethereal energy, almost like the supercharged GLS providing an extra boost!

Later, we enjoyed a serene coracle ride, gliding over calm waters surrounded by stunning rock formations. The simplicity of the moment—no engines, just us and the gentle rhythm of the water—was enchanting. The adventure continued with a visit to Saranpur Lake, a picture-perfect backdrop for photos atop gravity-defying boulders. We joked about not tumbling into the lake, which boasts clean drinking water and no crocodiles!

That evening, Evolveback organized a magical dinner amid the boulders. Sharing stories under the starlit sky, we felt awe and adrenaline—especially when reminded that leopards occasionally roam nearby! Amidst tales of the GLS's 0-to-100 kmph launch in just 6.1 seconds, we indulged in delicious food and toasted an unforgettable day.

As the night ended, we shared wild stories—some classified and strictly off the record—over a final bottle of wine. The next day, we transitioned from the opulent comforts of Evolveback to the luxurious embrace of the GLS. The tinted windows, whisper-quiet cabin, and five-zone climate control made us feel like royalty as we embarked on another epic drive to Bangalore.

Our escapades had already started trending on social media, perfectly capturing the essence of our "Viral Escape." This whimsical journey was a perfect blend of heritage, luxury, and camaraderie—creating memories that will last a lifetime.
